How to Keep Kids Learning (and Loving It) All Summer Long

A child reads at a desk at home

This time of year, many families begin looking ahead to summer break. Along with plans for sunshine and relaxation, it’s common for schools to raise concerns about potential learning loss, often referred to as the “summer slide.” Without the structure of school, students can lose up to two months of math and reading progress between June and August. This impact tends to be more significant for students from lower socioeconomic backgrounds and those with learning differences, potentially affecting their long-term academic outcomes (National Education Association).

But unless summer school is specifically recommended by your child’s education team, more schoolwork isn’t always the best solution. In fact, studies show that rest and unstructured time are essential for children’s academic, social, and mental well-being, especially for those who may already find school challenging (Scientific American). Striking a balance between rest and continued learning can feel overwhelming, but it doesn’t have to be. Let reading come to the rescue!

A growing body of research shows that meaningful reading experiences over the summer not only prevent academic setbacks but also boost children's overall academic and social skills. This is especially true for students with learning differences and those from underserved communities (National Education Association). To help families make the most of summer break, the educators, reading experts, and parents at Rally Reader have pulled together our favorite ways to keep kids engaged in joyful, productive reading:

1. Public libraries are your friend
Many libraries offer summer reading programs packed with prizes, incentives, and events for readers of all ages. From storytimes to craft hours to teen book clubs, there’s something for everyone (and it’s all free). Check out what your local library has planned and see what sparks your child’s interest.

2. Follow their passions
Do you have a budding scientist, chef, doctor, athlete, or artist at home? Lean into those interests with subject-specific magazines, books, or educational apps. When children read about topics they’re naturally curious about, they stay engaged longer and learn more deeply.

3. Explore museums and parks
Public spaces like museums and nature centers are designed to educate through a mix of written, visual, and hands-on experiences. Many offer free programming and reading-based scavenger hunts or exhibits. These outings can be both fun and surprisingly educational.

4. Try innovative reading tools like Rally Reader!
Our app combines the appeal of screen time with books your child genuinely wants to read. Real-time feedback and individualized support helps build confidence, fluency, and a love of reading that lasts well beyond summer.

Summer should be a time of joy, exploration, and growth, not academic pressure. With a little creativity and the right tools, families can turn summer break into a season of inspiration. Whether you’re visiting the library, following your child’s passions, or using tech to support their learning, remember, every page turned is a step forward. Rally Reader is here to help you make it a summer full of stories, smiles, and success!
