Tracking Progress Helps You Reach Your Goals
While setting goals is important for success, monitoring and tracking progress towards goals is extremely important as well, according to research published by the American Psychological Association. Chances for goal achievement are even more likely if progress is reported publicly or physically recorded (Frequently monitoring progress toward goals increases chance of success, Science Daily, American Psychological Association, October 29, 2015). Tracking progress helps individuals keep goals on course, and reporting this progress creates a sense of accountability for goals.
It is important for goals to be monitored and tracked effectively. One way to ensure this is by setting SMART goals. SMART goal setting is a formula that helps ensure individuals meet targeted outcomes SMART goals are:
Specific, clear and linked to exact outcomes.
Measurable, either over time or by incremental but noticeable progress
Achievable and attainable
Realistic and make sense for the individual
Time-bound by a realistic deadline for completion.
Reading is no different. When children track their reading progress, they are more motivated to continue towards their goals. Rally provides statistics (words/minute read, accuracy, streaks, etc.) so kids can see their baseline, as well as the gains they’ve made in words per minute and accuracy. Rally also enables kids to look back at all the “trick words” they have mastered. These words are collected as digital cue cards after children have mastered them, so readers can look back at them at any time to see the words they have learned. Rally also scans texts for predicted challenge words, which can be previewed before a reading session. These two kinds of words help children monitor their progress in reading. Additionally, Rally encourages kids to set reading goals, and celebrates them for reaching daily and weekly targets.
